Dona Berry age 91 passed away March 8, 2018 surrounded by loving family after a short illness. She was born October 19, 1926 to Paul and Gladys Bales in Mabton, WA. She moved at a young age to Coos County, OR where she lived in several cities while her father was a logger. She graduated from Coquille High School where she met her future husband of 65 years; Willard Berry. They were married March 16, 1947 after he returned from WWII.
Dona enjoyed supporting her children in their many activities and many camping and fishing trips with family. She liked reading, sewing, needlework and gardening. Dona always had 6 foot tall tomato plants with loads of tomatoes, huge corn plants and of course her raspberries. She also loved her roses. Dona loved spending time with her grandsons and great granddaughters.
She worked as a housekeeper for Sacred Heart Hospital for 19 years. After retirement Dona and Willard travelled extensively across the US in their camper or 5th wheel. They also traveled to Europe, Australia and New Zealand.
Dona spent many years giving back to the Eugene and Springfield communities. She volunteered with Oasis in Eugene and with the SMART program in Springfield reading to children for 5 years. She volunteered for 20 years shelving books at the Springfield Public Library, often times in the young children’s book section. She had to give up her precious volunteer work at age 89. However, over the last several years she had volunteered around 400 to 500 hours per year.
She was preceded in death by her husband Willard in 2012, her mother and father Gladys and Paul Bales and her brother Donald Bales.
Dona is survived by her daughter Beverly Wheeler of Eugene, son Duane Berry and wife Marann of Salem, grandson Paul Berry and wife Samantha of Sherwood, grandson Brian Berry and wife Anne, great granddaughters Margaret and Willa Berry of Portland, sister Thelma Goodwin of Medford and many nieces and nephews.
