Donald Thienes Sr. of Walterville passed away October 12, 2017 at the age of 88. He was born June 29, 1929 in Eugene, Oregon to Earl and Bessie (Richardson) Thienes.
Don owned and operated El-Dorado Logging Company until he retired in 1980. He then went on to make several woodworking projects for his family. He enjoyed building things and working with his hands.
Don loved hunting, fishing and running rivers in Oregon and Idaho in his McKenzie River boats that he custom built. He was an avid Oregon Duck fan and loved spending time with his family and friends. Don’s favorite past time was just enjoying his home and all the wildlife that passed through his yard each day. He was a true woodsman who loved Nature. He often said that he "loved his trees more than any tree-hugger"
He is preceded in death by his wife Diane Kathryn Thienes Nov. 22, 2011 and his son Donald Thienes Jr. in 2004.
Don is survived by son, Ron Thienes (Shannon); daughter, Jennifer Sue Engel (Mitch); Daughter-in-law Catherine Thienes; grandchildren, Gretchen Smith, Amity Thienes Torrent, Seth Thienes, Eli Thienes, Jessica Clark, Lucas Engel, David Blanco Ashley Ragnone, Jessica Fisher and nine great grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be made in Don’s honor to: McKenzie High School Athletic Fund.
A private burial will take place at Greenwood Cemetery in Leaburg, Oregon. A celebration of life will be held on June 30, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. at Don’s home near Walterville.
Services are in care of Major Family Funeral Home in Springfield.
